Sinai in Song

The Scholar in Residence weekend, scheduled for March 20-21, will be postponed. We will continue to celebrate the Cantor during a special Shabbat service in December of 2020, and we will reschedule our Scholar in Residence weekend to March of 2021.

Celebrating Cantor Keys 25th Year with Musical Scholar in Residence — Noah Aronson

It is fitting that Cantor Keys chose a renowned Jewish musician for Temple Sinai’s 2020 Scholar in Residence Weekend.  In her own words:

Noah Aronson is an incredibly warm and engaging prayer leader. His music uplifts the soul, elevates the prayer service, and is highly conducive to congregational participation. Even if you haven’t heard his music before, it feels instantly familiar. I can’t wait to introduce him to our congregation!”

The William M. Stern Scholar in Residence program at Temple Sinai was instituted in 1967 and we have been fortunate to offer it nearly every year. We are thrilled that the weekend of March 20-22 will be overflowing with song as we continue to celebrate Cantor Keys’ 25th year.

Noah Aronson is considered one of the most sought-after Jewish musicians in North America, making over 65 community appearances each year and is known for his unique, engaging, and deeply soulful approach.

After earning a degree in Jazz Composition and Piano from Berklee College of Music, Noah held the position of Composer-in-Residence at Temple Beth Elohim in Wellesley, MA where he produced four albums of Jewish communal music with his mentor, Cantor Jodi Sufrin.

As a solo musician, he has released three full-length albums and songbooks entitled, ‘Am I Awake,’ ‘Left Side of the Page,’ and his latest project ‘More Love’ featuring his five-member Israeli Berklee alumni band. Songs from these albums are now sung in Jewish communities and summer camps worldwide and have been included as part of the curricula in major cantorial schools in the US.

In 2013, Noah had the distinct honor of leading over 5,000 people in Friday evening worship at the URJ Biennial in San Diego, CA. In 2015, he partnered with Behrman House, the largest distributor of Jewish educational materials, to create an innovative, music-based curriculum entitled, Hebrew in Harmony.

In 2018, Noah created ‘The Chai Project,’ where he partnered with 18 communities to compose 18 new songs for 2018. Each song was created in collaboration with the leadership of each congregation to reflect both their uniqueness as well as their connection to the broader Jewish community.

Noah currently lives in New York City and tours year-round, visiting communities nationwide and abroad. In addition to his tour schedule, Noah pursues his love of teaching by serving on the faculty of Hebrew Union College in Manhattan - Jewish Institute of Religion’s Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music.

Our Scholar in Residence program opens with a Friday night service filled with Noah’s compositions, featuring Noah, Cantor Keys, George Emblom, the adult choir and the Mizmor Shir! band. On Shabbat afternoon, Noah will lead a prayer embodied workshop that includes physical movement in Albers Chapel. We will continue to honor Cantor Keys on Saturday night with a few roasts, followed by Havdalah, and an uplifting and engaging concert with Noah and the Mizmor Shir! band.

On Sunday morning, Noah will perform with all the children from religious school for the religious school families, and he will conduct a workshop for religious school staff on Sunday afternoon.

Noah’s music is beautifully diverse and defies categorization as being one style or another. With children, his songs are goofy and fun. At services, his songs are soulful and uplifting. In his compositions, you can hear touches of classical, folk, gentle rock and even – what he calls – “ballad with a backbeat.”  His music is accessible, and he thrives on engaging congregations and audiences. We hope to see you throughout the weekend of March 20-22. The events with Noah promise to be joyous!

Tickets for the Saturday evening concert are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. All other Scholar in Residence events are free and open to the public.
